This three-part virtual series provides a practical foundation in trauma-responsive care, helping participants better understand how trauma affects the brain, behavior, relationships, and healing. Through interactive learning, participants will gain knowledge and practical strategies to recognize the impact of trauma and apply trauma-responsive approaches that foster safety, connection, and resilience.
This series is designed for foster, adoptive, and kinship caregivers, as well as professionals working in behavioral health, social services, healthcare, education, first response, and community organizations.

Earn up to 6 CEUs: Each session is approved for 2 CEUs by the New Mexico Counseling and Therapy Practice Board.
What You’ll Learn
Part 1: How Our Brains Respond to Stress and Defining Trauma
Learn how the brain and body respond to stress, threat, and danger. Explore basic brain functions, including the fight, flight, freeze, and fawn response, and examine how chronic stress can affect the developing brain. Participants will also learn the differences between single-incident trauma and complex trauma through lecture, videos, and facilitated discussion.
Part 2: The Lasting Impact of Trauma
Examine how chronic stress and trauma affect individuals, families, and communities. Participants will review the survival brain and learning brain, explore the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) Study, and gain a deeper understanding of trauma’s lasting impact through lecture, videos, and facilitated discussion.
Part 3: Fundamentals of Trauma-Responsive Care and Managing Vicarious Trauma
Apply trauma-responsive principles to build safer, more supportive environments through relationship-building and regulation strategies. Participants will also explore the effects of vicarious trauma and practical approaches to maintaining personal well-being while supporting others through lecture, videos, and facilitated discussion.
